Quite a remarkable book. I was first interested in the book because it is set in Queenstown Castle overlooking Dalkey Island, in the part of Dublin I know best. Dalkey of course is part of the setting for James Joyce’s Ulysses, not far from the Martello Tower which inspired the quote
The sea, the snotgreen sea, the scrotumtightening sea.
But back to Sebastian Barry
I have fallen into reading more contemporary Irish books authors, Andrea Mara1, Claire Keegan2, Graham Norton3.
But soon I was utterly captivated by Sebastian Barry’s rich prose. The storyline starts gently enough, but you soon find intimations that you are to be taken on a journey into Ireland dark Catholic past.
Broken lives made whole, but tragedy awaits, and then a fierce reckoning.
